NBHA Names New Ambassador Charmayne James

The National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) is dedicated to the promotion and expansion ofthe of the sport of barrel racing. The NBHA works tirelessly on the forefront of the industry to coordinate and produce a variety of events from grass root local jackpots to recording breaking world championship events. To aid the further promotion of the sport, the NBHA is proud to announce its partnership with 11-time Barrel Racing World Champion, Charmayne James.

Both James and NBHA share an unyielding passion not just for the sport, but for the overall development of the discipline, which includes a strong educational component. James will assist NBHA at major world championship events by providing clinics and training seminars, along with autograph signing sessions and public appearances.

“At NBHA, we’re dedicated to the expansion of the sport of barrel racing, while continually striving to improve the experience for our existing members. These values perfectly align with World Champion, Charmayne James” states NBHA Director of Barrel Racing Bailey Nahrgang. “Her passion for the sport coupled with her practices both in and out of the arena, made this a natural fit for NBHA. In her role as an NBHA ambassador, James will help articulate NBHA’s vision for the sport.”

Charmayne James historic career was set in motion in 1982 when Gills Bay Boy (Scamper), found a home in James’ barn. Together they became the most iconic duo in the equine industry, dominating the barrel racing ranks from 1984 until his retirement in 1993.

James won the first of 10 world titles at the age of 14 in 1984. James was the first WPRA member to wear the coveted No. 1 NFR back number in 1987 and became the first barrel racer to win $1 million in career earnings. James and Scamper won the NFR average title six times (1984, 1986-87, 1989-90 and 1993). In 1996, Scamper became the first barrel horse inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. James won her 11th WPRA world title and seventh NFR average title aboard Cruiser (Cruisin on Six) in 2002.

Charmayne retired from her career in professional rodeo in 2003 and began a new career as a clinician and mentor, holding barrel racing clinics throughout the United States, Canada, South America, and Australia. At the forefront of her teaching is advocating a healthy mental attitude coupled with preparedness and physical conditioning for riders.
