Thank you NBHA! A Note from Martina Rose Coppola, Amsterdam NY

A note from Martina Rose Coppola, Amsterdam NY

Thank You NBHA!

I have been in the saddle ever since I could sit and I am 12 years old now. When I actually started to ride competitively, my passion was based in Dressage and Eventing. Then my interests shifted to the other side of the spectrum….the barrel racing world and wow do I LOVE IT! I had purchased a barely green-broke 10 yr old 13.2h AQHA Pony MS Smart Lil Lucy that I originally intended to be my jumping partner but mid training I  instead asked my father to help me train and pattern her on barrels instead. I wanted to give up so many times as it was way harder than I imagined it to be…but we never gave up and we persevered together. We have overcome many obstacles and have become one as a team. I am a member of the NBHA and a current member of NY 08. Every year since I joined the NBHA I have qualified to go to Youth Worlds but never had the opportunity to go until 2020…my parents said and as long as they were going to still be held, we were not going to let this pandemic stop us from living my dream. And what a dream it was!  I brought Lil Lucy along with my other horse Dun Zippin Daphne to  Youth Worlds (Daphne is another horse my father and I are also trying to make into a solid barrel horse) My goal for the trip was to do my best to keep those cans up and stay consistent with my times. I did just that!

1st Go I qualified with a 16. 804 on Dun Zippin Daphne but my 16.106 on Lucy didn’t make the cut for finals but was good enough to place us in 3D 3rd place in the Youth Girls Round 1 sidepot.

2nd Go I qualified on Smart Lil Lucy with a 15.838 tying us for 3D 3rd place and I ran a 16.260 on Daphne.

So, I was lucky enough to be a Finalist on both my horses!  We had two clean runs in the Finals. Lucy ran a 16.054 and Daphne ran a 16.691…not the times we had hoped for but clean runs just the same. What an amazing experience it was to be able to participate at such a well-organized show and against so many great riders. I have some practicing to do but I am very proud to have competed at this level on horses that my dad and I personally trained. It sure was a long trip traveling from NY to Georgia and even though we had to quarantine for 14 days when we got back it was all worth it! Thank You to everyone who made my dream come true and the continued support from all my family and friends and of course my valued sponsors.
