The International Barrel Horse Federation (IBHF) has been established to promote international awareness and interest in the sport of barrel racing and provide international competition for member countries.

The goals of the IBHF are to increase the number of participants, to promote barrel racing as an international equine sport, to foster quality and uniformity in barrel racing events, rules and  procedures, to create international competition and enhance the image of barrel racing, and  to provide a World Championship Show for all qualified international competitors.  

The National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA), with headquarters in the United States, has been extremely successful in promoting the sport of barrel racing throughout the United States and Canada, using its 3D/4-D format.  The governing body of the IBHF has adopted the 3D/4-D format and the methods and rules formulated by the NBHA for all international barrel racing competition.

Members of the IBHF will receive professional guidance as to the establishment of a barrel racing association within their country.  As a member of the IBHF such association would be required to use NBHA RULES and the name "National Barrel Horse Association of (Name of Country)."  For example, in France the association is known as National Barrel Horse Association of France.  This will establish the association as an affiliate of the IBHF.  Each member country may nominate their qualifying members to compete in the Open, Youth and Senior World Championships held annually in the United States.

One complete set (printed in English) of all copyrighted NBHA materials explaining the administration of the NBHA program will be made available to all IBHF members along with permission to duplicate them in the native language of the member.
